Selecting a Breeder
The Western Coton de Tulear Club recognizes that trust is earned, and claims are to be proven.
We believe in empowering the average pet buyer with the correct tools to verify and vet the claims that a breeder makes while identifying the traps of breeders who prioritize sales over all else.
The search for a responsible breeder of Coton de Tulear (or any recognized breed) in Canada should begin at the following resources:
OFA Open Database Search
OFA Breed Statistics
CanuckDogs Title Search
CanuckDogs Breed Standings
Breeders and exhibitors who are active in improving the breed will first by found in the CanuckDogs databases.
"But I don't need a show dog."
You don't buy a safety rated car because you need to win a Safety Contest.
Having results in events is not only for potential show dogs. It is a way to receive & view impartial assessment on the structure of a dog, and receive tangible proof of their claims without "taking their word for it." Structure is critical for the Quality of Life and well-being of the parent dogs, and their off-spring. Temperament is also assessed in the written standard.
Dogs who succeed in dog shows and events have also proven to be able to function with their owner as a team in a busy environment. They are proven to be able to travel, behave safely in a crowd, and be calmly handled by a judge.
Titles may also prove traits specific to obedience, therapy work, endurance, and others that may be important to you as a puppy buyer, and to fit into your lifestyle. By attending events, the owner of the dog is also proving their commitment to their dog, the future breed, and their dog's balanced lifestyle beyond breeding.
The Canuck Dog database posts CKC data, which is the most common, but not the only way that dogs are showcased & evaluated in Canada. Many more venues exist for showing off various skills and abilities. Breeders may also be involved in United Kennel Club, Temperament Test Associates Canada, a variety of standalone sport organizations (especially those breeders which focus on versatility), or travel to participate in American Kennel Club. Your responsible breeder will proudly show off these certificates from other venues. Always ask your breeder for verification of their claims. They want you to ask.
Dogs whose names (or kennel suffixes) are found in the Canuck Dogs Standings or Title Search, or in who hold certificates in other recognized organization can be cross-referenced to ofa.org where all health claims can be verified for a fuller look at a dog and breeder's balance.
